Medical Requirements for Firetruck Drivers
To drive a firetruck, you must obtain a DZ licence. In order to hold this DZ license, you must meet several criteria, such as being 18 years of age, holding a valid 'G' Class licence, passing Class 'D' License and/ or 'Z' Endorsement knowledge tests, and completing a medical examination. This medical examination includes a vision test, physical evaluation and diagnostic tests.
Vision Standards for Class 'D' Drivers
Firefighters applying for and holding a Class 'D' licence must have:

A visual acuity that is not poorer than:

20/30 with both eyes open and examined together

20/100 in the weaker eye, with or without corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses)

A horizontal visual field with both eyes open and examined together of at least:

150 continuous degrees along the horizontal meridian

20 continuous degrees above and below fixation

Medical Reporting Requirements for Class 'D' Drivers
You must submit a medical report if you are applying for a Class 'D' licence. The medical report form can be completed by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner (RN-EC) in Canada. You can obtain the form from your local DriveTest center.
If you are a firefighter who already holds a Class 'D' licence, you need to submit a medical report:
- every five years, under age 46
- every three years, age 46-64
- every year, age 65 and over
If you already hold a Class 'D' licence, you will receive a medical report form by mail 90 days before it is due.
