Driver Medical Exams for Firefighters in Ottawa, ON

Are you a firefighter looking to apply for or renew your firetruck licence? You will need to complete a medical exam. Here, our immigration physicians in Ottawa and Orleans discuss the medical requirements for holding a Class 'D' licence and what to expect during your driver medical examination.

Medical Requirements for Firetruck Drivers

To drive a firetruck, you must obtain a DZ licence. In order to hold this DZ license, you must meet several criteria, such as being 18 years of age, holding a valid 'G' Class licence, passing Class 'D' License and/ or 'Z' Endorsement knowledge tests, and completing a medical examination. This medical examination includes a vision test, physical evaluation and diagnostic tests.

Vision Standards for Class 'D' Drivers

Firefighters applying for and holding a Class 'D' licence must have:

  • A visual acuity that is not poorer than:

    • 20/30 with both eyes open and examined together

    • 20/100 in the weaker eye, with or without corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses)

  • A horizontal visual field with both eyes open and examined together of at least:

    • 150 continuous degrees along the horizontal meridian

    • 20 continuous degrees above and below fixation

Medical Reporting Requirements for Class 'D' Drivers

You must submit a medical report if you are applying for a Class 'D' licence. The medical report form can be completed by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner (RN-EC) in Canada. You can obtain the form from your local DriveTest center.

If you are a firefighter who already holds a Class 'D' licence, you need to submit a medical report:

  • every five years, under age 46
  • every three years, age 46-64
  • every year, age 65 and over

If you already hold a Class 'D' licence, you will receive a medical report form by mail 90 days before it is due.
